Scholarship Opportunities

Every year, the Phi Alpha Theta Organization offers several scholarship opportunities for its members. Four scholarship applications are due on March 1, 2011, if anyone is interested.

• Doctoral Scholarship 
• Annual Doctoral Scholarship program for advanced study by graduate student members who are pursuing a Ph.D. in History and who have passed general examinations by February 15, 2011.
• The Phi Alpha Theta Scholarship of $1,000
• The John Pine Memorial Award of $1,000
• Two additional awards of $750 each
• Graduate Student Scholarship 
• Phi Alpha Theta members entering graduate school for the first time and who are enrolled in a Master's program in History are eligible to apply for one of the following:
• The A.F. Zimmerman Scholarship of $1,250
• The Thomas S. Morgan Memorial Scholarship of $1,000
• The William E. Parrish Scholarship of $1,000
• Undergraduate Student Scholarship 
• Exceptional student members entering the Fall Semester of their Senior Year and majoring in Modern European History 1815 to Present are eligible to apply for:
• The Graydon A. Tunstall Undergraduate Student Scholarship of $1,000
• Phi Alpha Theta/Ben H. Procter Research Paper Awards Southwestern Social Science Association Meetings
• The Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society encourages student research and scholarly presentations by awarding the Ben H. Procter Research Paper Award prizes each year to the best of the papers presented by Phi Alpha Theta student members at the Southwestern Social Science Association annual meeting. Competition is not limited to the Phi Alpha Theta sections. The prizes include monetary stipends.
• Awards may be given in each of three categories – (1) United States History, (2) European History, and (3) Asian-Latin American-African History. 
• Each paper will be evaluated on the basis of its clear thesis, good analysis, smooth error-free writing, good use of a wide range of sources, and effective use of scholarly notes and bibliography. 
• Length of papers should be appropriate to the 20-25 minutes time allotted for presentation in the program sessions, e.g., 10-13 double-spaced pages plus notes.

...The Phi Alpha Theta Northern California Conference has changed its due date for research papers! Interested applicants now have until February 18 to email their papers to the Stockton PAT chapter (phialphatheta@pacific.edu).


Preregistration for the conference is $15; fees for lodging and transportation is dependent on how many people would like to attend the conference. Let us know if you're interested!

Undergraduate papers should be no more than 10 pages, and titles and abstracts are due February 4. You may even win a prize for best paper!

Interested in Getting Published?

For those of you interested in being published, the "History Matters" Undergraduate Journal at Appalachian State University is now accepting submissions for their 2011 journal. There is no fee to enter, and they accept all topics of history.

Great way to get some publication practice! Papers are due the last Friday in January. Good luck!
